Title: Coastal Migratory Pelagics EFH
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
This merged dataset represents the Essential Fish Habitats of Coastal Migratory Pelagics as described in Final Habitat Plan for the South Atlantic Region: Essential Fish Habitiat Requirements for Fishery Management Plans of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, The Shrimp Fishery Management Plan, The Red Drum Fishery Management Plan, The Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan, The Coastal Migratory Pelagics Fishery Management Plan, The Golden Crab Fishery Management Plan, The Spiny Lobster Fishery Management Plan, The Coral, Coral Reefs, and Live/Hard Bottom Habitat Fishery Management Plan, and the Calico Scallop Fishery Management Plan (October 1998).

The particular components included in this assembled dataset include: Exposed Seafloor in Atlantic coast Florida waters; Shoals in Biscayne Bay; Undeveloped Coastal Barriers in GA, SC, NC; One-mile buffered Inlets in FL, GA, SC, NC; Nursery Areas of NC; the Gulf Stream off the SE US Atlantic coast.

Purpose:
This dataset was assembled in support of ongoing South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) imternet mapping service (IMS) efforts in association with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI)
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

These GIS data sets includes the nearshore bathymetry of the Atlantic coast of Florida, as lines representing bathymetric contours and polygons representing the depth ranges between the contours. While only the polygon data are served on the ArcIMS site, line contours are also available by request. Please see the Distribution Information section below for data request procedures.

Geonex digitized the contours during 1991-1992 from clean, wrinkle-free paper National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) nautical charts. Geonex used the most current versions of the charts available at that time. The source charts used to create this data set varied in scale from 1:10000 to 1:80000, but in all cases, the largest scale charts available were used. Geonex staff members also interpolated additional contours not present on the charts.

This data set contains areas in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina designated as undeveloped coastal barriers in accordance with the Coastal Barrier Resources Act, as amended.

This boundary data set was digitized between 4/1/2007 and 5/11/2007 from the official John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System (CBRS) maps enacted by law. This data set complies with the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and other standards established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) endorses this data set as having been compiled to meet forty feet horizontal accuracy at the ninety-five percent confidence level relative to the boundaries shown on the official CBRS maps. However, these digital boundaries are only representations of the official CBRS boundaries and are not to be considered authoritative. The FWS is not responsible for any misuse or misinterpretation of this digital data set, including use of these boundaries to determine eligibility for federal financial assistance such as federal flood insurance. The official CBRS maps are enacted by Congress and maintained by the FWS. Copies of the official CBRS maps are available for viewing at the FWS national headquarters, regional and field (local) offices, and are also available for download at <http://www.fws.gov/habitatconservation/coastal_barrier.htm>. For an official determination of whether or not an area or specific property is located within the CBRS, or for any questions regarding the CBRS, please contact your local FWS office. Contact information for FWS field offices can be found at <http://www.fws.gov>.

This GIS data set represents inlets in the state of Florida. FMRI staff digitized these points (which were subsequently buffered to a one-mile radius) based on the Tidal Inlet Protection Strategies for Oil-Spill Response documents developed by Research Planning Inc. (RPI) for the Bureau of Emergency Response (BER) to aid in oil spill response. The east coast, Florida Keys, and west coast inlets include the inlet category code from the Inlet Protection Strategies. The Inlets in the Panhandle, and some that were not included in the Inlet Protection Strategies documents, were taken from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Entrances to Bays, and unnamed inlets were placed using the 1:40,000 scale shoreline as background.

Process_Description:
14 different datasets of varied sources were assembled using the "merge" tool within ArcGIS 9.2. This merged dataset was then modified with the removal of vast quantities of attribute fields of widely varying specificity and purpose. The dataset was then processed using the "Dissolve" tool based on the "ITEM" field resulting in a more simplified attribute table.
