Title: Snapper Grouper EFH-HAPC
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Essential Fish Habitiat (EFH) that is judged to be particularly important to the long-term productivity of populations of one or more managed species, or to be particularly vulnerable to degradation, should be identified as "habitat areas of particular concern" (HAPC) to help provide additional focus for conservation efforts. As a result of the Sustainable Fisheries Act Amendment to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act in 1996 the Councils and the NMFS have been mandated to use an ecosystem approach in managing the Nation's Fisheries. The Council has taken the first step with the approval of the Habitat Plan identifying and describing in detail essential fish habitat (EFH) for species managed throughout the South Atlantic and with the approval of the Comprehensive Habitat Amendment amending all existing FMPs to include descriptions of EFH and EFH-habitat areas of particular concern (EFH-HAPCs).
Purpose:
The spatial representation of areas which for Snapper Grouper ranked high in terms of ecological function, sensitivity, probability of stressor introduction, and/or criteria established for designation of Essential Fish Habitat-Habitat Areas of Particular Concern (EFH-HAPC). This layer is not considered complete at this date. We anticpate enhancing this file, as more data becomes available.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Assembled during 2005 with ArcGIS utilizing "merge" functionality with the following datasets:
--Florida Mangroves (represents mangroves in the coastal areas of Florida as mapped in the September 2003). Originator: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI), Coastal and Marine Resource Assessment (CAMRA) Publication_Date: 4/2004;
--Florida Seagrass (represents a compilation of statewide seagrass data from various source agencies and scales. The data sources were mapped from photography ranging in date from 1987 to 1999). Originator: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI), Coastal and Marine Resource Assessment (CAMRA) Publication_Date: 2003;
--Nearshore Hardbottom off the Florida Atlantic coast (coded to a bottom type based on the SEAMAP Bottom Mappping data). Originator: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI), Coastal and Marine Resource Assessment (CAMRA) Publication_Date: 7/2001;
--North Carolina Primary Nursery Areas (located in the upper portions of creeks and bays. These areas are usually shallow with soft muddy bottoms and surrounded by marshes and wetlands. Low salinity and the abundance of food in these areas is ideal for young fish and shellfish). Originator: North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Division of Marine Fisheries;
--North Carolina Secondary Nursery Areas (located in the lower portions of creeks and bays. As they develop and grow, young fish and shellfish, primarily blue crabs and shrimp, move into these waters). Originator: North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Division of Marine Fisheries;
--Hoyt Hills (data layer was created for the purpose of synthesizing and visualizing the essential fish habitats offshore of the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast). Originator: Department of the Navy Publication_Date: 2005;
--Oculina Bank Habitat Area of Particular Concern (The bounds were acquired from 50CFR622.35 from the federal register. These data were verified against the current version of the Federal Register dated November 5, 2003).
