This GIS data set represents coral and hardbottom habitats off Broward County Florida. These data are the results of an integrated mapping project undertaken to provide a habitat map of the shallow Broward County seafloor between the 0m and 35m contour. All data were mapped in ArcGIS9 and polygons were drawn at a scale of 1:6000 with a one acre minimum mapping unit. The entire area mapped was roughly 110 square-kilometers. For the production of these polygons, high resolution LADS bathymetry was used to map reef geomorphology, acoustic data (QTC and Echoplus) were used to aid in defining the geomorphologic features into habitat types, and a waterproof drop video camera from a boat was used as groundtruthing to confirm substrate type. The shallow inshore seafloor from the 0m to -6m contour was mapped using a combination of assimilated data types including aerial photography and high-resolution bathymetry and the deeper seafloor habitats, from the -6m to the -35m contour, were mapped using mostly high-resolution bathymetry and acoustic ground discrimination. The result produced a seamless GIS benthic habitat classification of the entire nearshore reef system in Broward County. This polygon GIS data set represents a compilation of statewide seagrass data from various source agencies and scales. The data were mapped from sources ranging in date from 1987 to 2007. Not all data in this compilation are mapped from photography; some are the results of field measurements. See the "Sources" section for more information. The original source data sets were not all classified in the same manner; some used the Florida Land Use Cover and Forms Classification System (FLUCCS) codes 9113 for discontinuous seagrass and 9116 for continuous seagrass; some defined only presence and absence of seagrass, and some defined varying degrees of seagrass percent cover. In order to merge all of these data sources into one compilation data set, FWRI reclassified the various source data attribute schemes into two categories: "continuous" and "discontinuous" seagrass. In areas where studies overlap, the most recent study where a given area has been interpreted is represented in this data set.This data set is not comparable to previous statewide data sets for time series studies - not all areas have been updated since the previous statewide compilation and some areas previously not mapped are now included. Sediments off the eastern United States vary markedly in texture - the size, shape, and arrangement of their grains. However, for descriptive purposes, it is typically most useful to classify these sediments according to their grain-size distributions. Starting in 1962, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) began a joint program to study the marine geology of the continental margin off the Atlantic coast of the United States. As part of this program and numerous subsequent projects, thousands of sediment samples were collected and analyzed for particle size.
This selection represents those sediments defined as SAND.
The sediment map of the Continental Margin Mapping Program (CONMAP) series is a compilation of grain-size data produced in the sedimentation laboratory of the Woods Hole Science Center (WHSC) of the Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and from both published and unpublished studies. Sediment was classified using the Wentworth (1929) grain-size scale and the Shepard (1954) scheme of sediment classification. Certain grain-size categories are combined because of the paucity of some sediment textures; blank parts of the maps indicate areas where data are insufficient to infer sediment type. Bathymetry is used as a guide in placing some of the contacts between different sediment types. However, because the true boundaries between sediment types are probably highly irregular or gradational, because the extreme textural variability that characterizes some areas does not appear at this scale, and because the accuracy of the navigational systems used during the earlier studies is limited, all contacts should be considered to be inferred.
The sediment classification for any given polygon (i.e. area) reflects the dominant surficial sediment type for that polygon. It does not mean that other sediment types are not present within the polygon, only that the dominant sediment type is the one that is most common.

Seven different datasets of varied sources were assembled using the "merge" tool within ArcGIS 9.2. This merged dataset was then modified with the removal of vast quantities of attribute fields of widely varying specificity and purpose. The dataset was then processed using the "Dissolve" tool based on the "ITEM" field resulting in a more simplified attribute table.
