Abstract:

The Grays Reef National Marine Sanctuary digital boundary was created as part of the Protected Areas Geographic Information System (PAGIS) project. A fundamental aspect of the creation of national marine sanctuary boundaries was the analysis of existing boundary definitions found within the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The digital boundary described here is a digital version of that boundary.

Purpose:

The creation of digital boundaries is part of the PAGIS project, which was created in part to provide each national marine sanctuary with a fullyl integrated geographic information system (GIS) encompassing spatial data and internet capabilities. One of the essential GIS layers being compiled for each sanctuary is a digitial boundary.

Boundaries for the national marine sanctuaries are defined within the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Coordinates listed within the CFR were converted from degrees/minutes/seconds to decimal degrees. In addition, the coordinates within the CFR were based on the North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27). ESRI's ARC/INFO was used to generate a point coverage from these points. This coverage was then reprojected to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83).
