Abstract:
The data presented in the Oculina Geographic Information System (OGIS) was collected as part of a cooperative project between: the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Undersea Research Program, NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (also primary sponsor of OGIS), NOAA's National Ocean Service, NOAA's Ocean Exploration Program, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) and Florida State University. OGIS provides a comprehensive, interactive data source for the Oculina Banks Habitat Area of Particular Concern (OHAPC), a marine protected area off the east coast of Florida in 70 to 120 meters of water depth. Data layers include: multi-beam bathymetry, single-beam bathymetry, sidescan mosaics, sediment analyses, resulting interpretative maps of habitat types, video and still imagery from submersible (human occupied and remotely operated vehicles) dive transects and point counts (fish and habitat cover), and dive narratives. The multi-beam and sidescan surveys performed in October 2002 provide a 1 meter resolution image of the bathymetry in the EORR.
Purpose:
OGIS provides interactive access to a variety of data sources that characterize fish populations and habitat condition in the OHAPC for use by fisheries managers, scientists and the general public. The images from these surveys will be used to assess the topography of the entire protected area. The results will also be compared with historical transects and submersible dive logs to assess any changes that may have occurred.

The initial surveys produced an extremely large dataset. Post survey processing calculates mean values for 1mX1m cells throughout the study area, reducing file size. The processing also removes outliers and erroneous results.

The horizontal coordinates are based on Differential GPS readings. Accuracy for these systems ranges between 1-2m.

The bottom detection range resolution of the Seabat 8101 multi-beam system is stated to be 1.25cm. However, this resolution is decreased by discrepancies due to tidal flux and sound velocity readings. These parameters are quantified for each line in the survey via CTD cast information.

The multi-beam and sidescan surveys were performed by Seafloor Systems Inc. A RESON 8101 multi-beam echosounder system is mated to a Differential GPS unit, DMSO 5 TSS motion sensor (quantifies heave, pitch and roll), and a SG Brown gyrocompass (measures yaw). A HYPACK navigation system is used to maintain vessel course throughout the survey. Course lines are maintained within a 10m range. The information from these modules is compiled in the ISIS Shipboard Data Acquisition and Image Processing System and logged to .xtf data files. Files are then processed in CARIS software to remove outliers and corrected for sound velocity and tidal flux. Promcess_Date:20021000
