Abstract:

This GIS data set represents sampling sites of the Coral Reef Monitoring Program. The Coral Reef Monitoring Project is a multi-agency collaborative effort between three institutions: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWC-FWRI), University of Georgia Institute of Ecology (UGA), and University of Charleston, South Carolina Department of Biology (UCSC). Data describes stony coral composition and percent cover values for stony corals, octocorals, sponges, zooanthids, macroalgae, seagrass, and substrate. Four different habitat types are sampled annually from 40 different sites beginning in 1996. Data is collected at each site through video data analysis using twelve 22m permanent video transects 40 cm off the benthos. Raw video is digitized by framegrabbing and post-processing. Digital images are analyzed using "Point Count for Coral Reefs" software which randomly places ten points on each image for categorization of benthos. ASCII files are generated for each station ranging from 1500-1800 analyzed records.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute.
