This GIS data set includes the nearshore bathymetry of the central east coast of Florida, including the Indian River Lagoon, as lines representing bathymetric contours and polygons representing the depth ranges between the contours. While only the polygon data are served on the ArcIMS site, line contours are also available by request. Please see the Distribution Information section below for data request procedures. Geonex digitized the contours during 1991-1992 from clean, wrinkle-free paper National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) nautical charts. Geonex used the most current versions of the charts available at that time. The source charts used to create this data set varied in scale from 1:10000 to 1:80000, but in all cases, the largest scale charts available were used. Geonex staff members also interpolated additional contours not present on the charts.
This data set was created to represent marine depth contours and depth range polygons, primarily for cartographic purposes.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data are not to be used for navigation. User should be aware that later versions of the source charts may be available and that contours may have changed. Consult the appropriate coast pilot and the most recent paper or digital charts available.

Geonex (now Avineon Inc.)
FWRI has checked all arc features for DEPTH attribute accuracy and D-coding accuracy and continuity. For the polygon features, the D-RANGE attribute was checked for accuracy and consistency. In the areas in which the positional accuracy was not corrected (see Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report), the attribute accuracy was only corrected for logical consistency in DEPTH, D-codes, and D-RANGE.
FWRI performed a thorough quality assurance and quality control check of these data during the Fall of 2001, including a check on positional accuracy, depth attribute accuracy, and D-coding accuracy and continuity. To check the data, FWRI used historical 1992 or prior NOAA nautical charts: 11485_03-06, 11484, 11475, 11476, 11478_01, 11474, 11472_01, 11472_02, 11472_04-06, and 11472_09. In all cases, the largest scale charts were used for verification. DEPTH and D-coding attributes are logically consistent.
Geonex interpolated 3-ft contours in places where they were absent from the charts. Some contours were not digitized if they were below the minimum mapping unit for the scale of the largest scale chart present for an area. The 24-ft contour was not digitized because it was only present on one 1:24000 scale chart off Port Canaveral. Some nearshore areas were not corrected for positional accuracy because the contours in the data set were so different from the contours present on available nautical charts. It is suspected in such cases that these contours may have been digitized from a different source. These areas include: Port Canaveral, Ponce de Leon Inlet, St. Lucie River, St. Lucie Inlet, and the Indian River North of SR 520 to a channel north of Sharpes. In the areas that the positional accuracy was not corrected, attribute accuracy was only corrected for logical consistency in DEPTH, D-codes, and D-RANGE.
FWRI staff moved the original linework to the positions shown on the 1992 or prior NOAA nautical charts when the contours were in error by more than 1/10 of a map-inch. Some nearshore areas were not corrected for positional accuracy because the contours in the coverage were so different from the contours present on the available nautical charts that it is suspected these contours may have been digitized from a different source. These areas include: Port Canaveral, Ponce de Leon Inlet, St. Lucie River, St. Lucie Inlet, and the Indian River from north of SR 520 to a channel north of Sharpes. Contours that were not present in the data set, but were present on the nautical charts were digitized, with the exception of very small contour areas and the 24-ft contour that was only present on the 1:24000 scale chart off Port Canaveral.

Avineon was formerly called Agra Baymont, which was previously GEONEX.
FWRI checked and corrected the positional and attribute accuracy of the polygon and arc feature classes against 1992 or prior NOAA nautical charts. Except in select nearshore areas, positional accuracy was adjusted if there was a difference greater than 1/10 of a map-inch between the coverage and the nautical chart. See "Logical Consistency Report," "Completeness Report," "Attribute Accuracy," and "Positional Accuracy" sections for further explanation of results.

Each line contour contains the attribute DEPTH, which represents the shallowest contour depth in feet. Special non-depth items are indicated by 3-digit codes. The D-coding attributes represent the presence or absence of each contour value. Each polygon contains the attribute D-RANGE, which represents the deepest depth value within the range.
