This GIS data set includes the nearshore bathymetry of the northern east coast of Florida, including the St. Johns River, as lines representing bathymetric contours and polygons representing the depth ranges between the contours. While only the polygon data are served on the ArcIMS site, line contours are also available by request. Please see the Distribution Information section below for data request procedures. Geonex digitized the contours during 1991-1992 from clean, wrinkle-free paper National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) nautical charts. Geonex used the most current versions of the charts available at that time. The source charts used to create this data set varied in scale from 1:15000 to 1:80000, but in all cases, the largest scale charts available were used. Geonex staff members also interpolated additional contours not present on the charts.
This data set was created to represent marine depth contours and depth range polygons, primarily for cartographic purposes.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data may contain attribute and positional inaccuracies. Use with caution. These data are not to be used for navigation. User should be aware that later versions of the source charts may be available and that contours may have changed. Consult the appropriate coast pilot and the most recent paper or digital charts available.

Geonex (now Avineon Inc.)
All entities and attributes have been identified and documented. FWRI has not verified attribute accuracy. FWRI has completed a partial quality assurance and quality control check for logical consistency between DEPTH and D-coding attributes.
The values of the DEPTH and D-coding attributes are logically consistent.
The values of the DEPTH and D-coding attributes are logically consistent.
Positional accuracy has not been verified by FWRI. Not all contours match the source charts. Some contours may have been interpolated from other sources. FWRI has not verified that all contours deviating from the source charts are interpolations.

This field indicates the depth (in feet) of the shallowest contour represented by the line. In cases where a non-depth item is represented, a special 3-digit number is used to describe the feature. The following values can be found in this data set: 0 = shoreline 3 = 3 feet 6 = 6 feet 12 = 12 feet 18 = 18 feet 30 = 30 feet 60 = 60 feet 555 = exposed at mean lower low water 777 = dredged channel 888 = spoil 889 = frequently changing 999 = chart border

Each line contour contains the attribute DEPTH, which represents the shallowest contour depth in feet. Special non-depth items are indicated by 3-digit codes. The D-coding attributes represent the presence or absence of each contour value. Each polygon contains the attribute D-RANGE, which represents the deepest depth value within the range.
