This GIS line data set represents depth contours (bathymetry) for the offshore areas of South Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas, as shown in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Chart 11013 39th Ed., Apr 25/92. FWRI staff digitized the contours off of a clean, wrinkle-free paper chart. This data set also includes the Bahamas shoreline.
To represent marine depth contours, primarily for small-scale (large area) cartographic purposes.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data are not to be used for navigation. User should be aware that later versions of the source charts may be available and that contours may have changed. Consult the most recent paper or digital charts available and appropriate coast pilot. The only shoreline represented in this data set is that of the Bahamas.

Attribute accuracy "Fair". Attribute accuracy determined to be approximately 95%. Test conducted on 5% of randomly selected features, which were compared to source material.

Data are topologically and logically consistent. Used Frequency command in ArcInfo to verify logical consistency. All attribute values fall within defined values. Line topology present.
Some contours were interpolated using other sources such as nautical charts and depth soundings (Geodas). This was only done in areas where text on the chart covered a contour.
Did not conduct positional analysis. Sample plot files were compared to chart and some deviation was observed in some areas. The data will be revisited if time permits.
