This GIS line data set represents depth contours (bathymetry) for the offshore areas of the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic Bight, and northern Caribbean, as shown in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Chart 411. FWRI staff digitized the contours off of a clean, wrinkle-free paper chart, using the most current version of the chart that was available in 1997.
To represent marine depth contours in vector format for small-scale (large area) cartographic purposes.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data are not to be used for navigation. User should be aware that later versions of the source charts may be available and that contours may have changed. Consult the most recent paper or digital charts available and appropriate coast pilot.

All entities and attributes have been identified and documented.
Attributes are logically consistent.
Not all contours present on the chart are included in the vector data set, and some additional contours have been derived from another source.
The source chart is at 1:2,160,000 scale. Depth contours may have changed since this chart was digitized.
The source chart (411) provided depth contours measured in fathoms
FWRI digitized contours off NOAA Nautical Chart number 411 at a 1:2,160,000 scale in ArcInfo.

Each contour contains the attributes FATHOM and FEET, which represent the shallowest contour depth in the respective units. A value of 999 indicates the line is a chart border. The D-coding attributes represent contour values in feet only.
