This brochure is designed to provide the public with information and a summary of regulations pertaining to hunting and other recreational use on the Frog Pond North Public Small Game Hunting Area. Regulations that are new or differ substantially from last year are shown in bold print. Area users should familiarize themselves with all regulations. For exact wording of the wildlife laws and regulations, see the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s wildlife code, on file with the Secretary of State and state libraries. This brochure and the Florida Hunting Regulations handbook should provide the information necessary for you to plan your hunting activities. These publications are available at MyFWC.com.

 

Permit, Stamp, and License Information:

Persons using public small game hunting areas are required to have appropriate licenses, permits, and stamps. The following persons are exempt from all license and permit requirements (except for the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp [federal duck stamp]): Florida residents who are 65 years of age or older; residents who possess a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing Certificate; residents in the U.S. Armed Forces, not stationed in Florida, while home on leave for 30 days or less, upon submission of orders; and children under 16 years of age. Children under 16 years of age are exempt from the federal duck stamp.

 

Licenses and permits may be purchased from county tax collectors, license agents, by telephone at 1-888-486-8356, or at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. A no-cost Migratory Bird Permit is available when purchasing a hunting license.

Quota Permit Information:

Dove - 50, no-cost, quota permits (no exemptions) for each of 4 dove field hunts during Phase 1 of dove season. One youth under 16 years of age may accompany an adult who holds a quota permit and hunt under their direct physical supervision. The permit holder and youth may each take one daily bag limit of doves. Permits are transferable. NOTE: A quota permit is not required during dove field hunts during phases 2 and 3 of dove season.


Permit applications: Hunters must submit electronic applications for quota and special-opportunity permits at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. Worksheets listing hunts, application periods, deadlines, and instructions are available at county tax collector's offices, FWC offices, or MyFWC.com. Quota application periods occur throughout the year beginning April 1. Please refer to the hunting handbook or MyFWC.com for specific dates. Worksheets will be available about two weeks prior to each application period.


Area Regulations
  • General

    General Area Regulations:

    1. Public access to the dove field is prohibited except for dove hunters during established dove field hunts (Saturdays only during dove season). During phase 1 of dove season, only quota permit holders and their guests may access the field and only on their scheduled hunt dates and times. Public use areas adjacent to the dove field are open to uses other than hunting (including scouting) year-round during daylight hours.

    2. Dove hunters may enter the dove field beginning 1.5 hours before sunrise and must exit through gate 1 or 2 no later than 1 hour after sunset.

    3. All vehicles must be parked in the designated parking areas.

    4. Public access on the dove field, other than by foot or bicycle, is prohibited.

    5. It is illegal to hunt over bait or place any bait or other food for wildlife on this area.

    6. Class 1 electric bicycles may be operated according to rules for traditional, non-motorized bicycles. All other electric bicycles may be operated only on named or numbered roads open to motorized vehicles. For more information visit MyFWC.com/ebike.”

  • Hunters

    Hunters and Check Stations:

    1. During Phase 1 dove hunts, each quota permit holder may be accompanied by one youth hunter and one non-hunting guest. The non-hunting guest shall remain under the direct physical supervision of the permit holder at all times during the hunt.

    2. A quota permit is not required to hunt the dove field during phases 2 and 3 of dove season.

    3. Walk-in access to the field is provided through gate 1, which is adjacent to the designated parking area near the intersection of SR 9336 (Ingraham Highway) and the C-111 canal. 

    4. Only persons in possession of a valid Florida "Persons with Disabilities Hunting and Fishing License" and their guests (sharing the same vehicle) may enter and exit the area through gate 2, operate their vehicle along the ADA vehicle route, and park in the designated ADA parking area along the western boundary of the dove field. Gate 2 is located on the opposite side of SR 9336 from the Southern Glades WEA designated parking area near SW 232 Ave. (Aerojet Road). To obtain the combination for gate 2, an individual must call the South Regional Office at 561-625-5122. Hunters are responsible for closing and locking gate 2 after each use. Vehicles are prohibited in the dove field and along its northern, southern, and eastern boundaries. Using the ADA vehicle route to access any other area is prohibited.

    5. There is no check station and hunt stations are not assigned. It is each hunter’s responsibility to position themselves a safe and respectful distance from other participants.

    6. Dove hunting is only allowed within the posted dove field. Accessing any other area from Frog Pond North PSGHA is prohibited.

    7. Hunters must pick up all shotgun shells and other trash before leaving the area.

    8. Dogs may only be used for hunting on the posted dove field and only during established dove hunts.

  • Guns

    Guns:

    1. Lead shot is prohibited for dove hunting on the Frog Pond North PSGHA. All hunters must use non-toxic shot approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

    2. Hunting with firearms other than shotguns is prohibited.

    3. For hunting migratory birds, only shotguns, bows, crossbows, and falconry may be used. Shotguns must be smaller than 10 gauge and incapable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined.

    4. Children under the age of 16 may not be in possession of a firearm unless in the presence of a supervising adult.

    5. The discharge of a firearm outside of periods open to hunting or in areas closed to hunting is prohibited per s.790.15 FS.

    6. No person shall discharge a firearm or have a loaded firearm in hand while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Bag and Possession Limits

    Bag and Possession Limits:

    Aggregate of mourning and white-winged doves - Daily limit 15.

    African and Eurasian collared-doves and rock dove (common pigeon) - No limit.

    Only one daily bag limit may be possessed while in the field or returning from the field. A hunter may leave their birds with another person if the birds are tagged with the hunter’s signature and address, the total number of birds by species, and the date the birds were harvested.
  • Direction

    Directions to the Hunting Area:

    The Frog Pond North Dove Field Public Small Game Hunting Area is located 8 miles west of Homestead in Dade County (see area map on reverse side).  From the Florida Turnpike’s end in Homestead, turn right (west) at first light (SR 9336).  Then, continue on SR 9336 through Florida City and follow signs to Everglades National Park. Look for signs to the Frog Pond dove field which will be on the right (north) side of the road (approximately 0.4 mile before entering the Everglades National Park).

    Legal to Hunt - Mourning dove, white-winged dove, African and Eurasian collared-doves, and rock dove (common pigeon) only.
    Shooting hours - 1/2 hour before sunrise until sunset.

If you see law violators or suspicious activities, contact your nearest Commission regional office or call 888-404-FWCC (*FWC or #FWC may also be used depending on your phone service provider). You may qualify for a cash reward from the Wildlife Alert Reward Association.
