Layer: Terrestrial critical habitat for the NW Atlantic Loggerhead DPS (ID: 14)

Name: Terrestrial critical habitat for the NW Atlantic Loggerhead DPS

Display Field: COMNAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolyline

Description: These data identify, in general, the areas of Final critical habitat (terrestrial) for the Northwest Atlantic Ocean Distinct Population Segment of Caretta caretta (Loggerhead sea turtle). Please see the federal register for textual descriptions of each unit. In general, critical habitat units include lands from the mean high water line landward to the toe of the secondary dune or developed structure. Each unit contains all of the primary constituent elements as defined below. Due to the dynamic nature of the shoreline, the gis representation of the proposed critical habitat may not appear to match the shoreline in all areas when compared to aerial imagery produced in a different time period, of a different resolution, or viewed at a different scale than the imagery with which it was created. The terrestrial primary constituent elements specific to the Northwest Atlantic Ocean DPS of the loggerhead sea turtle are: (1) Primary Constituent Element 1—Suitable nesting beach habitat that has (a) relatively unimpeded nearshore access from the ocean to the beach for nesting females and from the beach to the ocean for both post-nesting females and hatchlings and (b) is located above mean high water to avoid being inundated frequently by high tides.(2) Primary Constituent Element 2—Sand that (a) allows for suitable nest construction, (b) is suitable for facilitating gas diffusion conducive to embryo development, and (c) is able to develop and maintain temperatures and a moisture content conducive to embryo development.(3) Primary Constituent Element 3—Suitable nesting beach habitat with sufficient darkness to ensure nesting turtles are not deterred from emerging onto the beach and hatchlings and postnesting females orient to the sea.
