The Ocean Planning Information System (OPIS) is a prototype online regional marine GIS covering the vast ocean area bounded by the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, the exclusive economic zone, and various maritime boundaries. OPIS was developed to provide coastal and ocean resource managers in the Southeast access to regional digital geographic mapping information and technologies to facilitate coordinated decision making within and across the multi-layered U.S. ocean management framework. Special emphasis is placed on the federal ocean and coastal management and governance framework, and efforts are ongoing to develop similar data sets for state and local level policy frameworks.
The Southeast OPIS is an ongoing project that has and continues to rely on the vision, dedication, helpfulness, and energy of individuals from partner agencies and numerous other organizations. The OPIS partnership includes: North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Division of Coastal Management, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Florida Coastal Management Program, Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Coastal Resources Division, NOAA Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, U.S. Department of Interior - Minerals Management Service, Florida Marine Research Institute, and NOAA Coastal Services Center.
OPIS provides marine resource managers with timely and equitable access to downloadable data, cutting-edge online mapping functionality, and guidance on how to use GIS in a meaningful way with respect to ocean management. THE DATA INCLUDED IN THIS APPLICATION ARE BASED ON INTERPRETATION OF AVAILABLE INFORMATION AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS LEGALLY BINDING.
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
Southeast regional bathymetric contours consist of a vector coverage of bathymetric contours with increasing resolution in coastal areas. Contours were derived from a composite of several bathymetric datasets of varying regional coverage and resolution. Isobath intervals range from 2 meter in coastal areas to 200 meters in deep offshore areas.
- Purpose:
-
This coverage was developed to compliment other regional spatial data utilized by ocean planners in addressing management issues. It is intended only to provide general information on regional scale ocean depth and bottom morphology.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

- Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
-
The attributes of vector contours were found to be consistent both with the source data, and two independently derived spatial data sets i.e. 1:17 k vector shorelines, and navigational charts. Due to the highly variable quality and resolution of the data from which these contours were derived, this general consistency should not serve as a basis for confidence in specific features, or lack of features, represented or implied by the data.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Portions of this coverage were derived from different source data and subjected to different processing methods, as a result, isobaths exhibit discontinuities in several regions. There is also logically inconsistent overlap or spacing between the 200 and 400-meter isobath in some areas.
- Completeness_Report:
-
Coastal contours of 2-meter depth intervals and variable vertical and horizontal resolution are available for the coastlines of North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and the majority of Georgia with the exception of a 30 km zone north of the Florida boarder. Depth contours at 10-meter intervals and variable vertical and horizontal resolution are available out to 100 m depth for the continental United States from 38N to 89W stretching from the Northern coastal boundary of Virginia to the eastern extent of Louisiana. Data within this zone is not included for areas outside the continental U.S. i.e. Mexico, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Depth contours at 200-meter intervals and variable vertical and horizontal resolution, are available for regions deeper than 200 meters for the entire extent of the coverage. Note: The spatial completeness of this coverage is a result of interpolation and does not reflect the completeness of the source data.

Processing methods utilized in the preparation of this coverage set the upper limits of horizontal accuracy at 90 meters for depths of 0 to 10 meters, 900 meters for depths of 10 to 200 meters, and 9 km for depths greater than 200 meters.

FROM SOURCE DOCUMENTATION: Bathymetric surveys are plotted at map scales that range from 1/10,000 for harbors and channels to 1/50,000 for open ocean surveys, with 1/20,000 being the most commonly used scale. The horizontal accuracy of the soundings is generally 30 m, but it can vary from as fine as 15 m in ports and estuaries to as coarse as 75 m in the offshore areas. Differential GPS has improved this level of accuracy considerably for the most recent survey data.

All contours with "source" attribute defined as "NGDC" were derived from this source data. The spatial extent of the portion of this coverage derived from this dataset is bounded to the North and South by the parallells 37N and 31N. The East-West extent ranges from the shoreline to the 200 meter isobath between 37N and 35N, and out to the 2200 meter iosbath between 35N and 37N.

FROM SOURCE DOCUMENTATION: Hard copy charts have contour digitization performed at a rate of 21 measurements per inch of contour and at a nominal chart scale of 1:500000. The digitized contours and/or digital source data are input to a gridding routine developed by the Naval Oceanographic Office. This routine takes the values that fall within a grid node area of influence and, utilizing a multi-stage minimum-curvature spline algorithm, interpolates the values to derive a single representative depth value for each grid node (0.5 arc minute spacing),

Arcs derived from this source data provide coverage of the Florida shelf and are identified by the source attribute "dbdb_v" and the res attribute "30sec". The spatial extent of the portion of the coverage derived from these data is bounded on the West by the meridian 85W and on the North by the parallel 31N. The data extends seaward from the 10 to the 200 meter isobath.

FROM SOURCE DATA DOCUMENTATION: 5 arc minute grids are constructed by digitizing bathymetric contours of hard copy charts. The digitization rate and nominal chart scales are 21 measurements per inch of contour at a nominal chart scale of 1:1000000 for the 1 minute grid, 21 measurements per inch of contour at a nominal chart scale of 1:1000000 for the 2 minute grid, and 10 measurements per inch of contour at a nominal chart scale of 1:4000000 for the 5 minute grid. These digitally rendered contours are then put through a gridding routine developed by the Naval Oceanographic Office.
