Abstract:

In 1982, the Gulf and South Atlantic Fisheries Development Foundation, the Georgia Sea Grant College Program, and five shrimp bottom captains initiated a cooperative venture fishing program to determine how shrimp trawlers could be used for fishing for offshore finfish. Four alternative fishing methods were examined, including bottom trawling, trapping, bottom longlining, and handlining. Gear construction and gear use in the project are described and discussed, as are catches, ex-vessel prices, and other results/findings. Several illustrations, figures, and tables are provided, including a table of 45 LORAN C coordinates of the specific areas compiled by Cooperative Venture Project participants for 1982.
