Description:
Abstract:
This GIS data set represents the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) line of the southeast United States. The EEZ line represents the separation of federal waters from international waters.
On March 10, 1983, U.S. President Ronald Reagan signed proclamation 5030, which established the U.S. Excusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This consists of those areas adjoining the territorial sea of the U.S., the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. overseas territories and possessions. The EEZ extends up to 200 nautical miles (370 km) from the U.S. coastline. About 15 percent of this area lies on the geologic continental shelf and is shallower than 200 meters. Within its EEZ, the U.S. has sovereign rights over all living and non-living resources. Other nations may exercise freedom of vessel navigation and overflight within the U.S. EEZ (Source: Year of the Ocean Discussion Papers 1998; 2nd Ed. of Coastal and Ocean Law by Kalo et al. 1994).
Purpose:
These data are for reference only. These data are from NOAA's Ocean GIS, which was designed to provide marine resource managers with timely and equitable access to downloadable data, cutting-edge online mapping functionality, and guidance on using GIS in a manner meaningful for ocean management. THE DATA INCLUDED IN THIS APPLICATION ARE BASED ON INTERPRETATION OF AVAILABLE INFORMATION AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS LEGALLY BINDING.

Attribute Information
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
Attributes are accurate as described by NOAA.
Logical Consistency Report:
Attribute Description: Although not tested, these data are believed to be logically consistent. The geometry appears topologically clean.
Completeness Report:
This data set represents the EEZ line for the enitre southeast United States. Spatial and attribute properties are believed to be complete; although, attribute information has been simplified. Geometric thresholds from original data are preserved. No exhaustiveness tests have been completed.
