Abstract:
This GIS data set represents the shoreline of the state of Florida, including inland lakes and rivers, at a 1:100,000 scale. The data were obtained from US census 2000 files. The census data downloaded by county from ESRI's ArcData Online, were MAPJOINed to form a statewide data set. The "water polygons" and "counties" data were used to create the shoreline data set.
Purpose:
To visually represent the shoreline of the state of Florida at a 1:100000 scale.

Source Contribution: County shapefiles of the TIGER/Line files were downloaded from ESRI. These shapefiles were used to create a statewide shoreline.

Process Step:

Process Description: Downloaded shapefiles in Geographic NAD83 of the TIGER/Line data for "counties" and "water polygons" from ESRI's Web site. "Water polygon" shapefiles and "counties" shapefiles were merged into two statewide shapefiles. The attribute "LAND_WATER" was added to the "water polygons" shapefile. The water polygons and counties shapefiles were UNIONed, creating a statewide shapefile including LAND_WATER and COUNTY attributes. A sliver polygon in Lake Okeechobee was removed at this point. The processing time to run a dissolve in ArcMap was too long, so the shapefile was converted to a double precision coverage in order to run a dissolve in command line ArcInfo. To create the shoreline coverage, attribute items except for LAND_WATER were dropped and the coverage polygons were DISSOLVEd on the LAND_WATER attribute. Interior water polygons were coded as land so that only major water bodies would be included in the final coverage. The coverage was projected to Albers NAD83 and converted to a shapefile. The outer water polygon was removed for the shoreline coverage, and the data were loaded into ArcSDE.
