Abstract:
This GIS line data set represents depth contours (bathymetry) for the offshore areas between Havana, Cuba and Tampa Bay, Florida, as shown in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Nautical Chart 11420. FMRI staff digitized the contours off of a clean, wrinkle-free paper chart, using the most current version of the chart that was available in 1997.
Purpose:
To represent marine depth contours, primarily for small-scale (large area) cartographic purposes.
Supplemental Information: These data are not to be used for navigation. User should be aware that later versions of the source charts may be available and that contours may have changed. Consult the most recent paper or digital charts available and appropriate coast pilot.
In this data set, arcs representing chart borders are given a value of "999" for FEET and FATHOM attributes. There are also contour lines on the nautical charts that are not included in this data set. It is possible that these features were omitted because they are smaller than the minimum-mapping unit for this data set, or because the contour value was not included in this data set.
