Abstract:

This GIS data set represents bottom type data collected by the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program - South Atlantic, Bottom Mapping Workgroup. Areas are classed as either hard bottom, possible hard bottom or not hard bottom. Data extent covers Florida coastal areas from just north of Key Biscayne southward through the Florida Keys and westward to the Dry Tortugas. Coverage extends offshore to a maximum distance of approximately 10 miles.

There are two polygon coverages associated with the SEAMAP-SA data. This is due to discrepancies between the two datasets in the vicinity of Key Biscayne, FL. Instead of rectifying the two areas shared by the two datasets, both are included to represent the extent of survey work done in that area.

Data were archived by the Marine Resources Research Institute, SC DNR; Division of Coastal Management, NC National Estuarine Research Reserve; GA Southern Univ, Applied Coastal Research Lab; and FL Marine Research Institute, FWC.

Purpose:

The database provides scientists and managers with a regional view of bottom types for the entire South Atlantic Bight. Detailed source information for each data record provides curious users with the means of obtaining more specific information about areas of interest.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
