Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
Abstract:
The purpose of this map was to fill gaps in the Unified Reef Map in Hawks Channel of the Florida Keys. The accuracy of this map has not been assessed and should be used with caution. Benthic cover types were photo-interpreted primarily from side-scan sonar data (reflectance and relative depth acquired by USGS 2012/2013) as well as WorldView-2 satellite imagery (2010-2013). This dataset has been integrated into the Unified Florida Reef Tract Map as of 9/2014 (v1.4)
Purpose:
The purpose of this benthic map is to update an area which had not been mapped since the 1990s. Previous recent mapping efforts were not able to interpret this area due to lack of seafloor visibility in source imagery caused by turbidity.
