Description:
Abstract:
The Unified Patch Reef Map provides a continuous and consistent spatial representation of individual and aggregated patch reefs in Southeast Florida and the Florida Keys. The Unified Patch Reef Map was created by extracting patch reef features from several maps throughout the Keys including NOAA, Nova Southeastern University (NSU), National Park Service (NPS), and previous FWC mapping efforts. Following compilation of datasets, patch reef features were extensively reviewed and edited using updated and higher resolution imagery, Lidar, acoustic side-scan and in situ observations to ensure map accuracy and consistency. The resulting GIS layer consists of 14,196 patch reefs identified using the best available imagery and a consistent minimum mapping unit (MMU=150sqm) and digitizing scale (1:3,000) throughout the Florida Keys Reef Tract. NOTE: While the Unified Patch Reef Map layer was compiled from patch reefs identified in the Unified Florida Reef Tract Map, numerous features were edited and updated using newer, higher resolution imagery. As a result, there will be considerable differences between the Unified Patch Reef Map and the Unified Florida Reef Tract Map.
Purpose:
The purpose of this map product is to provide a seamless spatial representation of aggregated and individual patch reefs throughout the Florida Keys Reef Tract and surrounding area benthos using a consistent mapping scale, minimum mapping unit and classification methodology. Please refer to the technical report accompanying this dataset for detailed information and dataset use recommendations.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

All entities and attributes have been identified. A comparison between the 1:24,000-scale maps of the compiled data and the original delineated photos to determine the positional accuracy of polygonal shapes and attributes was part of the QC process (see process step).

The data were verified for logical consistency between field values.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
All spatial edits were performed using the best available imagery, in situ observation data, high resolution bathymetric data and earlier benthic maps. An accuracy assessment of dataset integration edits will be conducted in 2014. See source map metadata for positional accuracy reports specific to source data. Individual source map feature classes can be crossreferenced using the Source field.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. The Unified Patch Reef dataset was created based on the Unified Reef Map schema.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
2. Features from the FWC 2006 Patch Reef Map (name: Patch_Poly) were edited and appended to the Unified Patch Reef dataset. Shape artifacts from the conversion of the original raster dataset vector were smoothed (tolerance=15 meters) and simplified (tolerance=1 meter). Features were merged into the compiled Unified Patch Reef dataset.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
3. Patch reefs were selected from the Unified Reef Map and appended to the Unified Patch Reef dataset.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
4. In areas where there was overlap between existing datasets (Patch_Poly with NOAA Keys & HawkChannel_FWC, and Biscayne_NPS with SE Florida NCRI), overlapping features were evaluated and duplicates were removed or modified based on the best available imagery.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
5. No edits were made to datasets which met the MMU and classification scheme including; Broward-Miami, South Palm Beach, North Palm Beach, and Historic_FWC.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
6. In the remaining map areas, reefs smaller than the Unified Patch Reefs MMU were evaluated and either deleted or grouped with nearby reefs and reclassified as aggregated patch reef. This primarily occurred in the Biscayne_NPS map.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
7. In the Marquesas region, extensive edits were required to differentiate between aggregated patch and individual patch reefs which were not identified separately in the source dataset. Geometry edits were required to remove halos and other digitizing inconsistencies due to the coarse resolution and quality of the Ikonos imagery used to map the original Marquesas dataset. Numerous patch reefs were delineated that were missed in the original dataset.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
8. In the Keys NOAA and Patch_Poly map areas, all features were reviewed and screened. Geometry edits were required to remove halos and other digitizing inconsistencies from reefs identified by Keys NOAA due to the coarse resolution and quality of the Ikonos source imagery. Additional edits included deletion of non-patch reef features, delineation of missed patch reefs, and reclassification between individual and aggregated patch reefs.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
9. All edits were made at a digitizing scale of 1:3,000 to 1:5,000 from the best available satellite imagery, aerial photos, Lidar data, side scan sonar data, and in situ observations. Documentation of edits including the date and type of source imagery were attributed for each patch reef feature.
