description: Over the past several years, the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) system has received increasing public attention and has been the focus of numerous research and restoration activities. The IRL system includes the Indian River Lagoon, the Banana River Lagoon, and Mosquito Lagoon. In 2011, an unprecedented algal ‘super bloom’ of phytoplankton occurred, increasing concerns over degrading water quality and effects on fish and wildlife. The 2011 super bloom resulted in a 40% reduction in total seagrass coverage due to decreased light availability. In the years following the 2011 super bloom, water quality showed signs of improvement with modest gains in seagrass in some areas. This improvement was short-lived, however, as another bloom initiated in the fall of 2015 persisted through the spring of 2016. This study builds off FWC’s previous work by extending mapping efforts to quantify long term changes in seagrass cover in the years following the 2011 and 2016 super bloom events.
